As indicated by Venkat you can use any naming convention you want.

The basic thumb rules would be for how you can ideally name them :

1. Logical and be easily deciphered even if they are just appearing as codes without the text;
2. Consistent across the globe if it is a global enterprise;
3. Matching / Similar to Sales Org, Purchasing Org and Plants for at least two letters of the code;
4. Alphanumeric Characters would be more advisable.

Have seen various ways they are addressed.

Bottom line is that, there are no real rules for this.
